Launching The Wisegal Podcast!

Ahead of her solo exhibition 'Rustlings', we are delighted to announce our very first podcast episode with Catherine Rayner

We are thrilled to bring you The Wisegal Podcast, our first in what we hope will be regular podcast episodes.  You'll hear as gallery director Sarah Wiseman visits the studios of her gallery artists, lifting the lid on artistic processes, techniques and what life is really like as a professional artist.

For our very first episode, we are allowed rare access to the Edinburgh studio of the award-winning author, illustrator and artist Catherine Rayner.

Catherine Rayner has written and illustrated over a dozen critically acclaimed, award winning picture books for children, since graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 2004. She is the recipient of the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal (other winners include Sir Quentin Blake, Shirley Hughes CBE and Chris Riddell OBE) She has also illustrated books for Michael Bond, Julia Donaldson, Michael Morpurgo and Ursula Moray Williams.

Using liquid acrylics and silkscreen printmaking, Catherine’s lively and expressive line describes movement whilst playing with scale and space. By placing the animal to one side of the paper, for example, she suggests that it has just strayed into the frame and at any moment might just wander off again. Her silkscreens are made expressively and organically often including up to thirty layers of colour.

Ahead of her solo exhibition ‘Rustlings’ in October 2019 at Sarah Wiseman Gallery, gallery director Sarah Wiseman visits Catherine at her Edinburgh studio at the Edinburgh Printmakers for a chat about how she makes her work, the long-standing relationship she has with Sarah Wiseman Gallery, and the sheer joy of making art for not only picture books, but for gallery walls and the homes of her collectors all over the world.

Do listen, and let us know what you think!
