We are pleased to share a new collection of screenprints from printmaker Ewan Taylor. Drawing inspiration from film, pop culture, music and the power of spoken word, Ewan’s bold text-style compositions draw on themes of love, connection, identity and the human condition.
In this collection, Ewan continues to combine humour and the spirit of the pop art movement to convey emotively nuanced narratives. ‘A Case for Pencils’ sees a brightly coloured composition of neatly lined pencils, all adorned with gold and silver leaf messages. Each one revolves around the pencil being a powerful analogue tool of many possibilities, from ‘This machine fills sketchbooks’ to ‘This machine brings change’. About the print, Ewan says, ‘A simple pencil is the start of so many great things, and this is a celebration of the many, many brilliant possibilities that lie at the tip of a humble pencil.’
‘Don’t Squeeze Bees’ is a busy composition of a blue cyanotype background dressed in clusters of silver leaf flower heads with coloured centres – among them flies a few bumblebees. Below the image, text says, ‘Don’t squeeze bees. Don’t touch their wee knees. Look after flowers and trees - bees need these. We don’t want them to flee. So don’t bother this special species. Just leave the bees be please’.
Each print is plinth mounted in a white wooden frame, and currently on display in our lower gallery alongside Maxine Gregson.
