Luella Martin | Two New Solar Etchings

Etheral woodland landscapes made using the Solar Etching process by Luella Martin

We have two new unframed Luella Martin prints at Sarah Wiseman Gallery in our print browser, ‘Misty Woods’ & ‘Above & Below’.

Solar etching is a non-toxic and versatile alternative to etching, using light sensitive polymer coated plates instead of harsh chemicals to etch into the plate. They use sunlight or UV exposure and water to develop the plates, which she inks by hand to achieve rich, painterly colour. The result is highly photographic in style, and she often hand-paints the paper before printing, giving each original print subtle variations.

In ‘Misty Woods’, the composition captures winter trees, soft light and drifting fog, creating an atmospheric scene that invites viewers to pause and look beyond the forest. Layers of fine branches and towering trunks emerge gradually through the haze, giving the print a sense of depth, mystery and tranquillity.

In ‘Above & Below’, the foreground is dominated by an ancient riverside tree, the composition draws the eye across still water where intricate branches are mirrored in the reflection. Fresh greens begin to emerge against the muted tones of winter, capturing a fleeting moment when the landscape awakens with new life.
