The Figure & The Face

Sarah Wiseman Gallery is pleased to present the April collection, The Figure & The Face, an exhibition exploring figurative painting, portraiture, and storytelling through the human form. Featuring works by Erin Rosalie Thomas, Letitia Thompson, and Richard Twose, this collection brings together three distinctive artistic practices that examine narratives and the figure through the expressive language of paint.

Erin Rosalie Thomas investigates emotional nuance, body language, and facial expression as powerful forms of visual communication. Her work focuses on intimate, hyper-zoomed perspectives of the human face and body, capturing subtle moments where emotion and expression intersect. In this collection, Erin presents monoprints developed from her own photographic studies, isolating faces from their surroundings to create surreal, atmospheric, and intimate compositions.

Letitia Thompson creates narrative-driven paintings that explore identity, memory, and her place in the world. Each artwork begins as an abstract composition, allowing spontaneous brushwork and instinctive mark-making to guide the process. As the painting evolves, fragments of stories begin to emerge—often inspired by traditional folklore as well as Letitia’s own imagined narratives. The result is a body of work rich in symbolism, storytelling, and layered meaning.

Richard Twose is a figurative painter known for exploring dramatic narratives through movement, colour, and expressive gesture. His work often incorporates soft motion blur and dynamic body language, creating a sense of energy and transformation. Richard describes his style as “magic realism,” drawing inspiration from conversations with portrait sitters, Greek mythology, art history, and British folklore. In this collection, he invites viewers to interpret and construct their own stories, with compositions that feel both familiar and open-ended.
