This March, Sarah Wiseman Gallery are pleased to present a two person show with acclaimed printmakers Mychael Barratt & Trevor Price.

Mychael Barratt continues to satirically reference artists, filmmakers, literature & history in his work through the practise of printmaking. In this collection we see new editions to the well-loved series ‘Artist’s Cats & Dogs’. The series was an indirect result of a passing thought, as Mychael was leaving his studio, he asked himself ‘what kind of dog did Chagall have?’. It has since developed into the celebrated body of work it is, ranging from nods to the old masters to the contemporary artist legends Mychael admires. In this collection we see the lively abstraction and vivacious palette in the style of Basquiat in ‘Basquiat’s Dog’, the bold line and block colour of street artist Stik in ‘Stik’s Dog’, & the aged paper & etched line of Rembrandt in ‘Windhond – Rembrandt’s Dog III’.

In a new collection of woodcuts, ‘Once Upon A Time In London’, Mychael romanticises the London experience of a young Vincent Van Gogh through the lens of filmmaker Quentin Tarantino. After falling in love with the sentimental ending of Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’, Mychael decided to portray Van Gogh’s story with the same narrative during four different times of day - Morning, Noon, Evening & Night. In this series, Van Gogh is depicted with a dog, a girlfriend, and a successful sold-out art exhibition, creating a fairytale of the artist’s early career.

After moving from London to St. Ives Trevor Price became infatuated with the Cornish coast and nature. Trevor’s new surroundings and love for outdoor swimming has developed a new path for him with large scale intaglio prints. Beginning as photographs, Trevor will pixelate the images to abstract them into shapes and patterns to be etched into a Perspex sheet, capturing the drama of light and shadow of the natural surroundings. This allows the print to look photographic at first glance, then abstracted when viewed up close. Using a soldering iron or Dremel drill on polycarbonate sheets to carve the strong detail is now characteristic of his work.

In this collection, moments of crashing waves in Trevor’s rhythmic mark-making are captured in the ’01-01-23 Latitude 5◦ 6’ Longitude 5◦ 32’ 33” W’ woodcut series. They document the fluctuating dances of waves, minute by minute, studying the lively pattern and ever-changing sequences the water creates on the shore. Dot work details the engraved watermarks from the thrashing sea, while the grain of the wood illustrates the harmonious body of water beyond the waves.

Mychael Barratt & Trevor Price met over 20 years ago, when Trevor placed an ad for a studio mate and Mychael applied. The two have since flourished as artists and friends, becoming elected members of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers in the 1990’s - in 2013 – 2018 Mychael was elected the president & Trevor vice-president. Both have exhibited on numerous occasions together including the Royal Academy Summer Show.
