ROSE BRADFORD BIOGRAPHY
Statement
Leonard Cohen said: "A lyric has to move quickly from heart to heart".
In order to grasp the viewer's attention, something has to catch and hold it long enough for an interaction with the work to begin.
Each image I make is constructed to provoke interest in the viewer by using fragments of the familiar. My work starts as small figurative drawings that issue from a combination of observation, memory or dream. They are developed in order to continue a conversation with myself about an idea, and to share with other people some recognition or interest in the image, without whishing to impose any particular view.
I use the human figure to explore issues of relationship: between people, with oneself and inevitably reflecting the way in which we exist in relation to the wider world. My work is not sequential or linear in its development, but rather flows laterally between ideas. The transparency of tone, paint and inks on the paper is important to me, whether I draw, paint, or print the images.
