View Biography

Mychael Barratt was born in Toronto, Canada but thinks of himself as a Londoner. He has that immigrant's zeal for his adopted home and includes local settings that have a personal resonance in much of his work. Barratt is a narrative artist and anecdotal incidents from his day-to-day life which he gathers like a magpie are at the heart of his paintings and prints.

STATEMENT

My earliest artistic influences were Dutch artists such as Rembrandt and Vermeer and 19th century children's book illustration.  Although my tastes and interests have diversified over the years I still feel that both of those early passions were determining factors in the development of my work.  The result is a desire to create atmospheric images with a strong sense of the narrative.  It is immensely important to me that the spaces feel substantial and concrete even if the subject matter is purely flights of fancy.  This is combined with my magpie's inclination to wander about collecting any curious faces, settings and incidents that I may happen upon.  The series Life Imitating Art combines contemporary scenes of London but incorporates characters and objects lifted from art historical references.  These most accurately depict the world I live in - one brimming over with possible subject matter.
